Book review:
Perfectly pitched for children over 8, although still very enjoyable for adults too. The Last Wizard at the End of the World by Mark Wallace Maguire is a wonderful coming-of-age fantasy adventure. It also has a mellow hum running throughout which reminded me strongly of myths and legends.
Arestus returns in book two of this super series, although it could also be read as a standalone without spoiling the story. Arestus is a young lad who has seen battle and emerged older and wiser than his years. Shadowing his friend Cirin, also known as The Slayer, he picks up his faithful sword Coal Biter and heads off into the unknown on a new adventure. Joining them is the fierce she-wolf whom they call Sasha. They take a long boat and go in search of their lost friends. Destiny throws them into a storm which washes them upon the shores of Hallowell, a country about to embark into a war they do not want. Will the Last Wizard at the End of the World come to their rescue? Will he be prepared to pay the price for wielding magic? Whether he will or not, Arestus – putting the life of strangers before his own – runs into battle with fear as his shield and bravery as his sword.
The language and the pace are spot on for older children, the short snappy chapters lend to a quick page-turning pace in a book you will not want to put down. Very well-written with descriptions and action flawlessly interwoven, resulting in a smooth easy read.
Mark Wallace Maguire has created a quiet hero with a stoic heart, a new literature legend that I hope to read more about. The Last Wizard at the End of the World by Mark Wallace Maguire is an exciting adventure in this traditional style fantasy, a truly great read which comes highly recommended by Kids Lit Book Café.
